Cyclone Hockey – Where Winning is a Way of Life!
Cyclone Hockey is entering its 49th year of organized hockey at Iowa State University. Under the direction of Head Coach & General Manager, Jason Fairman, the Cyclone Hockey team is a perennial power in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). Iowa State, as an academic institution, has eight different colleges and close to 100 majors to choose from. Being a member of the Cyclone Hockey team, as well as an academically oriented student at Iowa State, will offer many opportunities over the course of a four year academic plan. According to U.S. News & World Reports, Iowa State ranks in the top 25% of public national universities. Another highlight at Iowa State is its’ vast Learning Community program where students can be grouped according to majors and areas of interest to help with the demanding schedules and academics.
As a program, Cyclone Hockey recruits players who are academically oriented and who wish to play the best hockey of their lives. Cyclone Hockey fields two teams within the ACHA, one in Division 1 and one in Division 3. The Division 1 team proudly plays in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League (CSCHL) along with member teams University of Illinois, Lindenwood University, Ohio University and Robert Morris University. Year in and year out, five teams from the CSCHL qualify on merit for the ACHA Men’s Division 1 National Tournament. The Division 3 team proudly plays in the new West Conference of the Silver Division of the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association (MACHA). Joining Cyclone Hockey’s D3 team in the West Conference are Dordt College, University Iowa, Kansas University, Missouri State University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Last season, Cyclone Hockey fell just short of its goal of two national titles in 2015-16; but, in the end, the organization had, arguably, the most successful season its ever had in terms of on-ice performance for both teams.
The Division 1 team established itself as a top-ten team in the ACHA Men’s Division 1 National Rankings early on and maintained that status throughout the season finishing the season ranked #2 in the nation. At the ACHA Men’s Division 1 National Tournament, Iowa State went through eighth-seeded Colorado, top-seeded Minot State, and second-seeded Stony Brook to make it to the championship game against third-seeded Lindenwood. Although the Cyclones narrowly lost 2-1, the season was a resounding success as the national runner-up and a 29-9-1-5 record.
The Division 3 team carved through the competition, losing only one game in collegiate play prior to the postseason. Cyclone Hockey’s D3 team made it to the championship game of the Mid-American Collegiate Hockey Association Silver Division Tournament, but lost 2-1 in overtime to Marquette. Iowa State qualified as the fourth seed for the ACHA Men’s Division 3 Regional Tournament, but lost in the semifinals to Aurora 4-2. Still, the D3 Cyclones finished with an incredible 26-3-1-1 record to make 2015-16 the first season in Cyclone Hockey history that both teams combined for 55 wins or more
